Starting Earlier on Cyber Careers

The gap between the number of job openings in cybersecurity and the number of people available to fill those jobs is stirring a conversation in technology, academia and government around the world.

"It's never too early to fuel an interest," said Michael Kaiser, Executive Director of the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).

Mr. Kaiser joined CTC in this week's podcast, featuring a summary of the NCSA's recent study with Raytheon, "Securing Our Future: Closing the Cybersecurity Talent Gap."

"Our goal is to drive this discussion," Kaiser told CTC. "Making sure that schools are thinking about it and paying attention to these issues and that parents are, too."

Kaiser also indicated that stakeholders have a nomenclature challenge. There may be changes required to inspire students. "When you ask, 'Are you interested in a job protecting the Internet?' the [response rate] goes up substantially, it almost doubles," Kaiser indicated. "We have a lot of work to do on our messaging. Let's change the way we start talking to young people."
